Taking me back to Home Ec. in high school, where I successfully sewed an apron with crooked pockets, I’m blessed to have a grandmother to lean on for the basics (she actually face-timed me, so I didn’t have to lug everything over to her house! I heart my grams! lol). I had been seeing bags like this all over and it inspired me to take the dive. Picked up way too much fabric and thought I could create works of art!
Some things that I learned:
- Having a good iron is a MUST!
- Using contrasting thread should be saved for experienced sewers (us novices need to hide our mistakes! lol)
- Using ribbon as “seam binding” is NOT a good idea…it’s a very slipper fabric that I’m sure you need a special pressure foot for that is WAY above my head at this point!
- Even if you’re using canvas….a stabilizer is worth the extra step. A floppy bag is not your friend!
- Last but not least….DON’T get all happy and sew the sides and bottoms together if you’re doing ANYTHING to the front or back of the bag…seam-ripping is NOT fun! haha :/
Over-all, I liked the finished project. Raw fabric included canvas exterior and cotton lining, with the same cotton fabric used for the bottom of the straps and pocket. The pocket is lined with black satin ribbon. Pre-sewn, measured 16″ W x 11″ T with a 4″ box-corner and two 42″ straps that wrap all the way to the bottom seam.
Okay, so all in all, it wasn’t THAT difficult. But, creating this beauty…crooked lines and all…has left me craving a new sewing machine!
Next adventure…..ZIPPERS!!! 🙂
